Jay Bista brought up his maiden first-class century as a strong batting show by Mumbai's top order flattened a depleted Rest of India attack on the opening day of the Irani Cup at the Brabourne Stadium.

Bista, the 20-year old opener who was drafted into the squad on the back of a match-wining double-century for Mumbai Under-23 in the final of the CK Nayudu Trophy, struck an aggressive 90-ball 104 as Mumbai ended the first day on 386 for 3. His opening stand of 193 with Akhil Herwadkar, who made 90, set the tone for Mumbai's sustained dominance.

Rest of India, missing the services of Brainder Sran and Nathu Singh because of injuries, started poorly, conceding as many as 27 boundaries in the first session as Herwadkar and Bista hammered 159. Bista, who hit 15 fours and a six, was the first to fall to Krishna Das, Assam's highest wicket-taker this season. Three overs later, seamer Ankit Rajpoot, drafted in as a late replacement, removed Herwadkar to leave Mumbai at 209 for 2.

Shreyas Iyer, who amassed 1321 runs in the Ranji Trophy, carried on from where he left off in the final, taking the bowlers on to make an enterprising 55, his 12th fifty-plus score of the season, before a lapse in concentration shortly before tea resulted in him slapping a Stuart Binny delivery straight to Srikar Bharat at point.

Suryakumar Yadav and Aditya Tare, the captain, took over, putting together 114 runs until stumps. Suryakumar, who curbed his natural instincts in the Ranji Trophy final last week, brought his A game to finish unbeaten on 88, while Tare walked back 38 not out.
