MOSCOW -- Gulfia Khanafeyeva, the world record holder in the
hammer throw, has reportedly failed a doping test.
Khanafeyeva tested positive for an unspecified stimulant at the
October 2007 World Military Games in Hyderabad, India, said
Valentin Balakhnichev, the Russian athletics federation president.
Balakhnichev told the All Sports news agency his federation was
waiting for the B sample.
Oleg Dmitrusenko, the federation's chief anti-doping official,
said he could not confirm the test because he hasn't received the
results.
The 25-year-old Khanafeyeva, who set the world record of 77.26
meters in June 2006, could face a two-year suspension.
Khanafeyeva's coach, Alexander Vasenko, told Kommersant Daily
she was taking an allergy drug that is allowed by the World
Anti-Doping Agency.
Last year, two Russian hammer throwers -- Tatyana Lysenko and
Yekaterina Khoroshikh -- failed doping tests and are awaiting a
ruling by the IAAF.
