That draw has arguably placed added importance on Thursday's clash, as both sides will know that a win tonight would put only Fleetwood -- giant-killers, maybe, but still a side struggling at the bottom of League Two -- between them and a two-legged semifinal.
For Everton, it would offer the club a serious chance of winning its first trophy since 1995, when Paul Rideout scored the only goal of the game to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final.
For Newcastle, it would be the chance to relive the joys of 2024-25, when Eddie Howe's side -- powered by Dan Burn and Alexander Isak -- beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final of this competition to end a 70-year domestic trophy drought.
Both sides enter Thursday's game having enjoyed mixed starts to the new season. Everton began their campaign by going unbeaten in eight but have now failed to win any of their last three games, losing the last two to Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively.
Newcastle, meanwhile, began the season by going within seconds of beating Liverpool, then claiming a valuable 2-0 win at Spurs. But recent defeats to Coventry and Aston Villa have Matthias Jaissle under pressure, with the valve only loosened slightly by Sunday's win at Crystal Palace.
