Safety in Green Bay helps earn Jamie Meder reps with No. 1 defensive line

More takeaways from Day 13 at Browns training camp …

1. D-line change: Backup nose tackle Jamie Meder took first-team reps at right defensive end. Meder is still listed as backup to Danny Shelton, but was rewarded with first-team reps at end because of a fine outing in Green Bay, highlighted by his tackle of James Starks in the end zone for a safety. By moving Meder, 6-2 and 308 pounds, to end, it gives the defense a bigger presence up front. Most of the ends are under 300 pounds. “I don’t think it’s to get bigger. I think we’re just gonna put our best guys out there and if that’s the combination that works, that’s who’s gonna be out there,” coach Hue Jackson said. The coach termed Meder “very valuable to us … and he’s very deserving. I think he’s tough, he’s strong, he knocks people back. He pursues the football.” Expect the coaches to try just about every combination possible up front before the season starts for real.

2. Terrific trio on hold: Even though receivers Josh Gordon (quad) and Corey Coleman (hamstring) returned to practice after lengthy recovery periods, don’t expect them to join Terrelle Pryor in the lineup Thursday night against the Falcons. Neither practiced in the team period (11 v. 11), and that is a requirement before just about any injured player gets back into game action. “You need to practice in our two biggest days [Wednesday and Thursday in season] in order to play. There’s no question about that,” Jackson said.

3. Call him T.P. Sr.: Terrelle Pryor has convinced the team to refer to him as Terrelle Pryor Sr., and he is now sporting the suffix on his jersey to honor his 2-year-old son, Terrelle Jr. “It’s my name now,” he said. “My son’s Jr.” So now, the Browns have Pryor Sr., Duke Johnson Jr., Robert Griffin III, John Hughes III and Scooby Wright III on their official roster.

4. Observations: Jackson said that Griffin doesn’t have a stop sign to “not run” with the ball during preseason. “You’ve got to the play the game,” Jackson said. “So if there’s an opportunity for him to take off and run, I’m sure he will. A lot of people want to try to make him be a pocket passer, see if he can. Then, those opportunities where he will run, they will present themselves as they come.” … Monday was the last day of open practice in front of fans with general admission tickets. There are a few more where only VIPs will be let in … Hughes and cornerback K’Waun Williams are absent for undisclosed personal reasons.
