All-round Athapaththu takes Sri Lanka 1-0 up against West Indies

Sri Lanka 102 for 6 (Athapaththu 39, Joseph 2-13, Fletcher 2-16) beat West Indies 101 (Matthews 28, Madara 3-16, Nilakshika 3-20) by four wickets

Chamari Athapaththu scored 39 off 26 balls after bagging 2 for 13 with the ball as Sri Lanka went 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series against West Indies, after the first one was washed out.

Karishma Ramharack was dismissed obstructing the field off the last ball of West Indies' innings, as they were bowled out for 101. In reply, Sri Lanka chased the 102-run target down with four wickets and 11 balls to spare.

Athapaththu gave her side a blazing start by adding 62 for the opening wicket with Hasini Perera, but Sri Lanka lost 6 for 29 to give West Indies hope. Qiana Joseph and Afy Fletcher took two wickets each, but Kavisha Dilhari's 18* took Sri Lanka to victory without further hiccups.

Earlier, three-wicket hauls from Malki Madara and Nilakshika Silva, apart from Athapaththu's two strikes, restricted West Indies to 101 after Sri Lanka opted to bowl. Hayley Matthews scored a patient 28, while only four West Indies batters got into double figures.

Ramharack given out obstructing the field marked the second instance of such a wicket on Sri Lanka's ongoing tour of West Indies, with Deandra Dottin being the first in the second ODI of the tour.

The sides now meet in the third T20I on Tuesday, with Sri Lanka eyeing a series win and the hosts looking to level the series.
