3pm Winning in Australia remains one of the toughest assignments in the game, and Bangladesh haven't done it by hanging on or waiting for Australia to implode. They weren't intimidated - not by Australia's reputation, not by their attack, not by the conditions, and certainly not by what happened in that warm-up game last week. From 54 all out against the CA XI to a Test victory over Australia in the space of a few days, cricket does occasionally produce turnarounds that sound almost too improbable to be true.
And for those who have followed Bangladesh through all the false dawns, frustrating collapses and missed opportunities away from home, this one will feel particularly special. Darwin will now forever have a place in Bangladesh cricket folklore and on that note, it is time for us to say goodbye. On behalf of our lovely scoring team, and my fellow co-commentator Andrew McGlashan, this is Sreshth Shah saying goodbye. Bhalo Thakben.
Thamizhachi : "That interview by shanto with Gilly - points to how calm headed he is as a leader. "
Winning captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto: "Very happy, proud of myself and the way the boys played. We did lot of hard work. [Mindset change to hone fast bowlers, not just rely on spin?] That is the biggest change for Bangladesh in Test format. Earlier, five years ago, pacers didn't want to play Tests. But we've been playing lots of Test cricket and they are giving importance to Test format. They want to play, want to perform, want to be world-class. That is the mindset they now have. Seniors like Mushfiqur and Mominul have encouraged them to play more Test cricket. [Tanzid] He attacks in the white-ball game, but in this Test he was calm and played shots on the ball's merit. As a top-order batter, we want him to have impact and he did it. [Is this Bangladesh's finest moment?] This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format. Going forward, we want to do something special in the future. [Mackay] We have that evidence but we have to play good cricket. We have to play five days of good cricket, and I'm going to say the same thing. If we play session by session, if the lower order keeps chipping in, those are the things."
Losing captain, Pat Cummins: "[Where did the defeat happen?] Probably that day one. I thought our prep was spot on, no excuses. They played well. We had to find a way to bat longer and then we couldn't penetrate with the ball. [The batting] Everytime there's a game like this, you look at match-ups. We've just finished the game, so we'll think about it. We're pretty good at bouncing back. [Bangladesh] They outplayed us in all facets, they were patient and disciplined. [Hazlewood and Green] Josh hasn't had a great run for injuries but he's one of the hardest workers. Green's tempo showed how good he is, he needed couple of us to hang in with him."
Player of the Match, Hasan Mahmud, for his nine-wicket haul: "Before the match, in the practice session, we were doing our best every second and believed in ourselves without thinking of the outcome. [Australia's batting line-up] We got some team plans with the coaches, watching videos, and that's what we did at the ground. [The pitch] The bowlers were patient, they stuck on the line and length. Results came. [Back home in Bangladesh] They will be very happy for me. My people will be celebrating."
Nayeem: "After the result of this test, I hope Australia will invite Bangladesh next time in their country in their premier venues like Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide etc."
2.50pm Some more reflections, it's good to see Alex Carey taking a moment to acknowledge the Australia fans who came for this Test, signing autographs and taking some pictures with the fans. Tough for the hosts, but good that the fans are not forgotten. Time now for the presentation.
Jordan on the jolt for the Aussies: "Will this be the catalyst to drop underperforming players and pivot to youth? Question the place of the old "superstars" that haven't performed like Labuschagne and Lyon? No, they won't. The same 4 old bowlers and untouchable Labuschagne "
Here's Mehidy Hasan Miraz: "It was excellent cricket from us. We've been here after a long time. Excellent performance from team, showed our character. [Mehidy's 100 in the Tour match helped?] We had the belief. Australia are a world-class team and have lots of good players. We knew if we beat them, it would be very good for our country. Had just one message, that we have to believe otherwise it's not possible. [Mackay Test] Need to think of how to perform in these conditions. We batted well and bowled well at the right times. The way Tanzid Tamim batted in the first innings, Shanto and Mominul doing very well, and then the excellent partnership with the lower order helped me. If they got out, I couldn't have scored my runs. They were there, so that's why I could. I told them 'do not think about who is bowling at you.' [captain Shanto] He is a very good captain, makes good decisions at the right time. Hasan took six-for in the first innings, spinners took six wickets in the second innings. The footmarks helped. [What it means back home] I think everybody is happy. They are very proud. It's a proud moment. Lots of crowd came, thank you fans, for coming and supporting us. They believed that we won the match and that's why we won."
abhishek: "I never thought i would ever see this - Bangladesh winning and not over celebrating by running everywhere. They are calm and composed, seem to be that they are saying yes this is our greatest Test win, yes this is greatest Test upset, but we are here to win... a winning mindset, more than the win that has impressed me, they are changing the culture of Bangladesh cricket it seems."
Ruhal : "Bangladesh have finally evolved into an all round Test winning team in Darwin!! "
Yousaf: "Upsets are for 20 over or 50 overs cricket only. For Test match it's determination not upset.... "
Rinso: "I didn't think I would see something to match the windies win against us at the gabba, but this might do it for the completeness of the performance "
The Bangladesh players are all applauding the fans in Darwin for their support through these four days. Shanto had said before this Test that he wanted his team to play "good cricket on all five days" and he didn't even need all five!
ChrisH: "Bangladesh just beat a full strength Australia by 9 wickets in Australia. Let that sink in! Congrats, Tigers, you did Test cricket proud."
2.37pm INJECT THIS IN YOUR VEINS! Bangladesh have done it. A historic Test victory in Darwin, and one that will surely rank among the greatest results in their history. They arrived in Australia as overwhelming underdogs, were bowled out for 54 by a Cricket Australia XI in their warm-up game, and have responded by beating Australia in their own backyard. From Hasan Mahmud's six-for on the opening day to Tanzid Hasan's maiden Test hundred and the contributions that followed, Bangladesh have been the better side across this Test.
And this wasn't a victory snatched through one extraordinary spell or one freakish session. Bangladesh earned it over the course of the match. They bowled Australia out for 198 after losing the toss, piled up 426 in response, and then held their nerve when Australia fought back. Every time the hosts threatened to drag themselves back into the contest, Bangladesh found another answer.
For Australia, this will take some digesting. For Bangladesh, though, this is a result to savour for a long, long time. Winning a Test in Australia is difficult enough; doing it after the preparation they had, against an attack containing four bowlers with more than 300 Test wickets each, makes it all the more remarkable. Darwin belongs to Bangladesh, and a new chapter has been written in their Test history. The 23-year wait for a Test in Australia was worth it. They're 1-0 up, and cannot lose this Test series.
Tanim : "You certainly cannot call this victory an upset"
jawad: "ive been waiting to watch bangladesh in Australia for years and for us to go and perform like this im so proud. The greatest win in our history imo "
And who are the leading Test wicket-takers to never take more than three in an innings?
Australia were easing into the season with golf and fishing; Bangladesh were beaten in a tour game. No one expected the first Test to turn out the way it did
