The 2026 NCAA Division I baseball championship is underway, and regionals are already off to a hot start.
On Friday, St. Mary's shocked No. 1 seed UCLA in Game 1 of the Los Angeles Regional 3-2. The Bruins are the first No. 1 national seed to lose its regional opener since national seeds were introduced in 1999. Will they be able to survive Saturday's game against Virginia Tech (4 p.m. on ESPN+) and stave off elimination? We'll have to wait and see.
In other big upsets, Milwaukee beat No. 4 Auburn 13-8 as the Panthers bolted to an early lead to open the Auburn Regional, in the Tuscaloosa Regional, SC Upstate earned its first NCAA tournament victory in program history with a 8-5 win over Oklahoma State, and St. John's secured a 6-5 win over No. 10 seed Florida State. To top off these impressive wins, there was a pair of 14-inning games, one between Ole Miss and Arizona State in which the Rebels came out on top 7-6, and another between East Carolina and Tennessee in which the Pirates prevailed for a 7-3 win.
On Saturday, VCU eliminated Tennessee from the NCAA tournament in a 5-4 win for the Rams. This is the first time the Vols have gone 0-2 in 16 NCAA tournament appearances. UC Santa Barbara secured a dominant 15-1 win over Holy Cross. The Gauchos' 15 runs is the most in an NCAA tournament game in program history. In the Lincoln Regional, Arizona State shut out South Dakota State 17-0. The Sun Devils had an 11-run inning in the fifth.
For the fifth time, the SEC is hosting nearly half of the regionals, including Georgia, Auburn, Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, Mississippi State and Alabama.
After not hosting any regionals in 2025, the Big 12 has two hosts. Kansas is hosting a regional for the first time in program history in Lawrence and won its first game over Northeastern, and West Virginia is hosting for just the second time in Morgantown. The Big Ten is hosting three regionals (UCLA, Oregon and Nebraska) as is the ACC (Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Florida State) and the one school outside the Power 4 hosting is Southern Miss.
Notably missing from this year's field is LSU, last year's Men's College World Series champion, meaning we will get a new winner by the end of the tournament.
