NFL Survivor power rankings: Why you should use Jaguars, Chargers in Week 1

Welcome to 2026 ESPN NFL Survivor! The rules are simple: Pick one NFL team each week to win its game. If that team wins (or ties), you advance to the next week. If that team loses, you are out. Survive all 18 weeks and you can take home a share of the $25,000 grand prize. The catch is that each team can be chosen only once.

While the rules are simple, the game theory is not. Depending on the size of your group or what platform you play on, the optimal selections could change drastically. Smaller groups will likely end well before Week 18, so optimizing win probability each week is paramount. However, the larger the group, the more you need to focus on saving strong teams for later, as your season is more likely to last all 18 weeks.

ESPN's game requires just one team each week, so that will be the strategic focus of this column. Week 1 features three teams favored by at least a touchdown, the most in a Week 1 since 2021. However, the big favorites tend to be worse this early. Over the past decade, teams favored by 7-10 points are 19-8-1 outright (.696) compared to 355-105 the rest of the season (.772).

Despite that caveat, you still generally want to take the biggest favorites in Week 1. This week, the two highest win probabilities belong to the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars. Making those teams even more appealing is that both have difficult schedules the rest of the season, as neither team is in the top 14 in projected future value based on Mike Clay's cheat sheet.

The only reason to avoid the Chargers and Jaguars is that they will be the two highest-selected teams in Week 1. If you are looking to be contrarian, the best option is the Las Vegas Raiders, especially in larger pools.

While the goal each week is to advance, the ultimate goal is to outlast all your opponents and chop the prize pool with as few users as possible. Advancing with a team like the Raiders will give you more long-term expected value than your competitors, even if it incorporates more short-term risk. This is especially true in larger pools. Here is my plan for Week 1, as of Wednesday morning, depending on how many entries I have available. NFL Survivor allows you to enter anywhere between 1-25 entries.

  • One entry: Jaguars

  • Three entries: Jaguars, Chargers, Raiders

  • Five entries: 2 Jaguars, 1 Chargers, 1 Raiders, 1 Pittsburgh Steelers

  • 10 entries: 3 Jaguars, 3 Chargers, 2 Raiders, 2 Steelers

  • 25 entries: 8 Jaguars, 8 Chargers, 5 Raiders, 3 Steelers, 1 Detroit Lions

Note: Odds by DraftKings and subject to change.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. Cleveland Browns)

While the Chargers are the biggest favorites, the Jaguars get the slightest edge in larger pools. They project for slightly less ownership, and they also have less value down the road than the Chargers. Jacksonville only has two more games after this week against bottom-10 opponents. Both of our ESPN models have a relatively big gap between the Chargers and Jaguars, but the betting markets have been moving toward Jacksonville and away from Los Angeles all week. Ultimately, I will take the slightly more contrarian side as my top choice.

Chance to win: 77% (ESPN Analytics), 75% (Mike Clay)
Spread: Jaguars -8.5 (-470 moneyline)
Future value: 20th (49% average win probability)
Selection: 17%

2. Los Angeles Chargers (vs. Arizona Cardinals)

If you are in a small survivor group that is unlikely to go all 18 weeks, then the Chargers are probably the best pick. ESPN's two models prefer the Chargers over the Jaguars, and if your goal is purely to take the highest win probability path, the Chargers are the optimal pick. However, the Chargers still have four games left against the Raiders (two), Miami Dolphins and New York Jets after this week. Two of those matchups are in Weeks 14 and 16, which are two-pick weeks in some other major contests. That is enough for me to pivot to Jacksonville, but the Chargers are still a strong Week 1 pick.

Chance to win: 81% (ESPN Analytics), 87% (Mike Clay)
Spread: Chargers -9.5 (-520 moneyline)
Future value: 15th (54% average win probability)
Selection: 20%

3. Las Vegas Raiders (vs. Miami Dolphins)

How risky do you want to get in Week 1? ESPN Analytics has this as the only game all season where the Raiders are favored. The Dolphins grade out as the worst team in the NFL, and they are on the road. While the Raiders are also one of the worst teams in the NFL, picking them also means you will be in a much better position going forward than your peers if they win. In large pools where you have multiple entries, the reward is worth the risk if you use the Raiders for some of your entries.

Chance to win: 60% (ESPN Analytics), 71% (Mike Clay)
Spread: Raiders -3.5 (-185 moneyline)
Future value: 30th (25% average win probability)
Selection: 6%

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. Atlanta Falcons)

For those of you who are squeamish about the Raiders but still want to fade the chalk, try the Steelers. Mike Clay's model makes this Pittsburgh's easiest game all season. As a team favored to finish below .500, the Steelers lack significant future value, though they do have home games against the Browns (Week 8) and Carolina Panthers (Week 16). I slightly prefer the Raiders, since they have the same betting odds as the Steelers except with even less value down the road, but Pittsburgh is a perfectly viable dark-horse option this week.

Chance to win: 59% (ESPN Analytics), 75% (Mike Clay)
Spread: Steelers -3.5 (-185 moneyline)
Future value: 17th (49% average win probability)
Selection: 5%

5. Detroit Lions (vs. New Orleans Saints)

Detroit is the third team this week favored by a touchdown, but unless you are mass-entering a contest, I would prefer to save the Lions. They have eight games after this week against bottom-10 teams, including matchups against the Jets, Dolphins, Tennessee Titans and Cardinals. In higher-stakes contests, they are likely picked in fewer than the 12% currently on ESPN, but given other strong plays this week, I would pass on the Lions for now.

Chance to win: 72% (ESPN Analytics), 81% (Mike Clay)
Spread: Lions -7 (-310 moneyline)
Future value: Second (70% average win probability)
Selection: 12%
