Talking Points
Pressure mounts on Carrick
Man United are winless in their last five games. They have suffered defeats against Manchester City (Premier League), Brighton (Carabao Cup) and Atlético Madrid (Champions League). Prior to that, United drew against Everton and lost their opening game against Hull City. It has been a tough start to the campaign for Carrick after finishing strong last season, guiding United back to the Champions League.
Carrick also faces challenge in the dressing room after Lisandro Martínez's outburst in an interview after the Champions League loss against Atlético. Martínez openly criticised the club hierarchy for not improving the squad depth. He then had a conversation with club authorities and apologised for his comments.
Most United supporters will have agreed with Martínez's assessment, however, the flip side for Carrick is that it only brings more noise when the team is already under scrutiny. Carrick has to ensure that all the focus is on winning games.
Leeds can trouble Man United
Prior to last weekend, Leeds United were unbeaten in the league. They started really well against Arsenal on Saturday, creating more chances in the first half and scored the opening goal thanks to James Justin. But they conceded twice in eight minutes to eventually lose the match.
Despite the defeat, it was an encouraging performance and a confidence booster for the rest of the season. Leeds boss Daniel Farke said he was proud of his team's effort and if they had been more clinical with their chances, it could've been a famous win.
Leeds will want to bounce back quickly after the loss. Farke will be hopeful that his team maintains the same performance levels, and with the help of Elland Road atmosphere, they can add more misery on their long-term rivals.
Stats
Man United's six points from six games is their worst start to a top-flight season in 40 years.
Leeds ended a run of 10 winless Premier League games against Man United with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in April. They haven't secured consecutive league wins over their rivals since winning both games in the 1971-72 campaign.
Leeds are also unbeaten in their last seven Premier League home games (W4, D3).
Man United lost three of their last five matches, as many as in their previous 21 under Michael Carrick.
For a second consecutive season, Man United have no clean sheets in their first six games, the first time they've done so in back-to-back campaigns since 1930-31 and 1931-32.
