Then all eyes turned to Anfield for the blockbuster clash between Liverpool and Manchester City. The title contenders faced off in a highly anticipated match, just weeks after Man City were found guilty on more than 100 charges of serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations. But it was Enzo Maresca's side that had the last laugh, taking advantage of a Ryan Gravenberch red card to win 3-0, with goals coming from Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki.
Elsewhere across the continent, Sassuolo host AC Milan in Serie A.
