Chesson, Diggs earn Maryland's top honors

FREDERICK, Md. - This year marks the 20th annual Maryland Consensus All-State Team, which reflects the top 30 vote-getters through the Big School and Small School all-state process. More than a dozen high school football reporters contributed to the voting this year, which is compiled by Sheldon Shealer of ESPNHS.

Old Mill running back Rob Chesson, Good Counsel defensive back Stefon Diggs, River Hill coach Brian Van Deusen and Good Counsel coach Bob Milloy received the top honors for 2011.

FUN FACTS: Interestingly, Van Deusen, who has coached River Hill to three state titles, was a member of the very first all-state team as a quarterback at Atholton in 1992.

RETURNING HONOREES: Five players are making a second straight appearance on the Consensus All-State team, which marks the most repeat performers in the 20-year all-state process. Those players are Stefon Diggs, Brian Gaia, Cyrus Jones, Colton Kmetz and Deon-Tay McManus.

BREAKING IT DOWN: Good Counsel produced six of the 30 Consensus players, followed by Gilman with four, Calvert Hall with three and DeMatha and Quince Orchard with two each. ... The MIAA A Conference and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference accounted for eight players each, followed by Frederick and Montgomery counties with three each, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City and Prince George's County with two each and Howard County and the MIAA B Conference with one each.
