Le'Veon Bell says he's cool with the decision not to play in the preseason. The downside: "I really hate watching Sam (Darnold) play because I want to be out there with him ... I know how special he is." Bell says Darnold has the ability to make throws that are "not normal."

Tough week for the Jets' linebacking corps: First, Avery Williamson (season-ending knee injury), now Brandon Copeland (four-game PED suspension). Copeland wasn't a lock to make the team, evidenced by his fourth-quarter appearance in Atlanta. That said, he's been getting some first-team work this week. This hurts their depth and special teams (he played on the PR and KOR units). It may explain why they signed LB Stephone Anthony. The Jets have a solid OLB in Jordan Jenkins. Their other OLB spot is shaky. What about rookie Jachai Polite? He's on the third team, struggling in his first camp.

As usual, Drew Brees will see his only preseason action in this third game Saturday against the Jets. Brees said he is fine playing so little in the preseason — but he wants it to be "quality" work. He even embraces the idea of facing aggressive Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who isn't afraid of heavy blitzing in preseason games.

Good job by Justin Wilson to come on with two on and one out in the seventh and strike out Francisco Lindor (three cutters) and Oscar Mercado (nice 1-2 slider). Since coming off the IL on July 2, Wilson has allowed two runs in 16 innings.

The Jets have signed LB Stephone Anthony, who was released Sunday by the Falcons. Anthony (6-3, 245) was the Saints' first-round pick in 2015. He was traded to the Dolphins in 2017 and played under Adam Gase. The Jets have been in the linebacker market since losing Avery Williamson last Thursday to a season-ending knee injury. In 50 games, he has 150 tackles and one sack. To make room for Anthony, they waived S Santos Ramirez.

The Indians give the Mets an extra out in the sixth when Oscar Mercado drops a routine fly ball in shallow left field and Michael Conforto makes them pay when he slams a 1-2 slider with two outs into right-center for a two-run homer and 4-2 lead. Bieber has pitched an almost great game, but he hung one slider to J.D. Davis and Conforto went down and golfed this one over the fence.

Who would have thought the Mets' key offseason acquisition would be J.D. Davis and not Edwin Diaz or Robinson Cano or Jed Lowrie? He belts a 447-foot home run to center field off Shane Bieber to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.

The Mets have a difficult schedule the rest of the way -- starting tonight against Cleveland, their next eight series are against teams .500 or better -- but at least 26 of their final 38 games at home, where they're 34-21 (compared to 30-39 on the road).
