Warriors expect Steph Curry (ankle) to play in opener vs. Lakers

The Golden State Warriors expect Stephen Curry to be available for Wednesday night's season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers despite tweaking his right ankle during an open scrimmage on Sunday afternoon.

Curry was a full participant in practice on Monday morning and Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Curry reassured him he was "fine" soon after leaving the floor in clear discomfort.

Curry rolled his ankle on a dribble move from the right wing midway through the scrimmage. After the misstep, he stopped action, banged the basketball on the floor and limped to the locker room in front of a concerned arena of teammates and fans. He didn't return to the scrimmage.

But Curry's ankle responded well overnight and the medical staff cleared him to continue his ramp up to the regular season, expecting him to be out there against the Lakers on Wednesday after another practice on Tuesday.

Curry will turn 39 in March. He spent the summer reconfiguring his routine to better manage a persistent right knee problem that forced him to miss 27 games last season. The Warriors were careful with his preseason minutes and Kerr said they will have him practice less to ease his workload.

The Warriors are already without starting wings Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler III, both rehabbing serious knee injuries and expected back midseason.

Starting center Kristaps Porzingis remains out indefinitely with a private health issue and won't travel to Los Angeles with the team. Starting guard Brandin Podziemski missed Monday's practice with lower back tightness and is questionable for the opener.
