Patrick Kane progressing, still on same timetable

CHICAGO -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane has started skating again and remains on a 12-week recovery timetable after fracturing his clavicle last month, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said Friday.

“He was skating before practice,” said Quenneville, who was unsure if it was Kane’s first skating session since his injury. “He was out on the ice. He was actually flying out there. He’s progressing real well. Now he’s going to have a tough stretch of trying to keep him away from trying to play a game right now.”

Kane broke his clavicle when he was cross-checked to the ice and collided with the boards against the Florida Panthers on Feb. 24. He had surgery the next day and was given a 12-week timetable for his return. Quenneville said the timetable has not changed.

Quenneville said Kane’s timetable would only be altered if the medical staff approved it.

“There will definitely be hurdles that have to be passed, the medical clearance first and then you go from there,” Quenneville said. “We’ll see how that plays out. We’ll do what’s best for him first.”

The Blackhawks have gone 7-1-1 since Kane was injured. Kane was tied for the league lead in points prior to his injury. He still leads the Blackhawks with 27 goals and 37 assists.

Kane said earlier this month that he was eager to play again, but he knew he had to be patient.

“Yeah, I wish I could play tonight,” Kane said March 8. “That’d be awesome. But it’s one of those things, you’ve got to be patient with it. You’ve got to listen to the doctors and make sure you’re not putting yourself in a position to re-injure it and make it even worse down the line. Do whatever you can to get it as healthy as possible and make sure the bone’s healed before I completely come back.”
