Cardinals release safety Jackson
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals released safety Dexter Jackson, who had been sidelined since training camp with a back injury.
Jackson, the Super Bowl MVP with Tampa Bay two seasons ago, had not been able to participate in training camp and had been on the injured reserve list since early September.
He was released late Wednesday, said Cardinals spokesman Mark Dalton. He was not given an injury settlement.
Jackson, 27, signed a five-year, $14 million contract with Arizona as a free agent last year. He played at free safety for all 16 games for the Cardinals during the 2003 season.
Jackson will receive a prorated portion of the $2.25 million he was to have made this year.
The team also released linebacker Levar Fisher, a second-round draft pick from North Carolina State in 2002. Fisher had been on the injured list with a knee injury.
Quintin Harris was given Jackson's starting safety job by new coach Dennis Green during June mini-camps. Jackson practiced briefly in training camp, then was sidelined again with the back problem.
