This lonely letter has become the all-encompassing symbol of Miami athletics, instantly conjuring an image of the half-orange, half-green horseshoe on the sides of the helmets and just about everywhere else. It's a noun: Where'd you go to school? The U. It's a slogan: U gotta believe! It's a taunt by opponents: U stink! Regardless of how it's used, though, it always means one thing -- Miami. In 1973, Miami's fund-raising department was looking for a way to separate itself from the other schools with UM initials. Miami designer Bill Bodenhamer suggested the "U" idea, which lent itself to numerous slogans and became the school's trademarked logo. -- Heather Dinich
