Now that the Emmy-award winning video series is over (oh c'mon, it's February, gimme a break), it's time to hand out the report card for the entire ACC. In case you missed any of the videos (and I know you were glued to each one of them), here's a rundown of how each team fared based on their performances for the 2010 season:
Boston College -- C
Clemson -- D
Duke -- D+
Florida State -- A+
Georgia Tech -- D
Maryland -- A-
Miami -- C-
NC State -- A-
North Carolina -- B-
Virginia -- D
Virginia Tech -- A
Wake Forest -- D+
For those of you wondering about the difference between ACC champs Virginia Tech and runner-up Florida State, my reasoning is this: Virginia Tech lost to an FCS school, Florida State didn't. The Hokies lost their bowl game -- in rather ugly fashion. FSU beat the SEC East champs. Frank Beamer has been there, well, a while. It was Jimbo Fisher's first season. In the end, both had great seasons. Don't sweat the small stuff.
Now, as for the final grade ...
The ACC gets a C- this year. Based on the above scale, it was an average season or better for at least half the conference. Overall, though, it fell below expectations, and Georgia Tech and Clemson share some of the blame for that with their losing seasons and bowl losses. The ACC was 4-5 in its bowl games this past season and 34-23 against nonconference opponents (.596). The ACC finished 4-5 against the SEC. The only winning record against AQ conferences came against the Big East at 5-3. The good news, though, was that four teams were ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25, and the ACC championship game was finally a success.
