This is one of the toughest parts of the gig, honestly. It would be so much easier to write who doesn’t get a sticker (Al Groh, Ralph Friedgen). The best performances, though, are the ones that get rewarded. And the best performances come against the best competition. Here are the five helmet stickers for Week 3:
Florida State: The entire team gets a collective sticker for its 54-28 romp of No. 7 BYU. The defense forced BYU into five turnovers, Christian Ponder threw for two touchdowns and for another, and the running game scoffed at the change in altitude.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor: His ability to scramble and keep plays alive were the difference in the fourth quarter, as his 81-yard pass to Danny Coale and 11-yard touchdown pass to Dyrell Roberts were the difference in a 16-15 win over Nebraska.
Clemson running back C.J. Spiller: He finished with 219 all-purpose yards, including a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the fifth way Spiller has accounted for a score with the Tigers after collecting touchdowns by a rush, catch, kickoff return and, last year against Virginia, throwing on a halfback pass. He finished with 17 carries for 77 yards but left the game early again with a foot injury.
Miami quarterback Jacory Harris: Harris completed 20 of 25 passes for 270 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and 10.8 yards per pass in the Canes’ 33-17 win over Georgia Tech on Thursday night. He played even better than he did in the season opener against Florida State and made fewer mistakes.
UNC receiver Erik Highsmith: The freshman came up big with six catches for 113 yards and a touchdown in the Tar Heels’ 31-17 win over East Carolina. Highsmith became the first true freshman to catch for 100 yards since Hakeem Nicks in 2006. His biggest plays came in the fourth quarter and helped the Heels pull away from a scrappy ECU team.
