The Denver Broncos have announced that new coach John Fox has completed his first staff in Denver.
The last additions followed a Fox trend. He kept assistant special teams coach Keith Burns, who former coach Josh McDaniels held over from the Mike Shanahan era. Fox also added assistant secondary coach Sam Garnes. Garnes played for Fox while Fox was the defensive coordinator with the Giants, and he coached for Fox in Carolina last season.
Fox has 18 assistants, including strength coaches. Eleven, including much of the offensive staff, are holdovers from McDaniels’ staff (which is a high number) and six were brought over from Carolina. The only coach on this staff who wasn’t in either Denver or Carolina is defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. He was the secondary coach in New Orleans.
It’s not shocking that Fox, a defensive specialist, brought in the most help on defense. Denver was fairly solid on offense last season, so the continuity will help. It’s key that Fox worked with retained offensive coordinator Mike McCoy in Carolina in the past, so McCoy has continuity with the players and a history with Fox.
With Denver’s staff complete, the AFC West still has some key openings with Kansas City still needing an offensive coordinator and Oakland looking for a defensive coordinator in addition to some other assistants.
