Ed Reed's career by the numbers

A look at the storied career of safety Ed Reed, who announced his retirement Wednesday evening and will be honored at a news conference at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Baltimore Ravens' facility:

1 -- Reed is the only player in NFL history to score touchdowns off a punt return, blocked punt, interception and fumble recovery.

2.5 -- Reed averaged one interception every 2.5 games (including playoffs) over his 11-year career.

3 -- Blocked punts returned for touchdowns by Reed in his career, which ties him for the most in league history. He recorded the first blocked punt for a touchdown in Ravens history on Sept. 30, 2002, which was the same game Chris McAlister returned a missed field goal 107 yards for a touchdown against the Broncos. Reed's last blocked punt came against the Seahawks.

9 -- Reed's postseason interceptions, which ties an NFL record. The other players who have picked off nine passes in the playoffs are: Charlie Waters, Bill Simpson and Ronnie Lott. The only active player who has more than four interceptions in the postseason is Asante Samuel (seven).

10 -- Touchdowns Reed scored at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. He reached the end zone only three times on the road: a touchdown off a blocked punt in Arizona (2003), a fumble return in Washington (2004), and a punt return for a score in Cincinnati (2007).

13 -- Multi-interception games by Reed, which are the most in NFL history.

20 -- Years since a safety won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award before Reed earned it in 2004. He finished with nine interceptions, 78 tackles, three forced fumbles and two sacks that season. Before Reed, Kenny Easley of Seattle was the last safety to take the award, in 1984.

70 -- Career interceptions (including playoffs) with the Ravens, which is easily tops in team history. No Ravens player has even had half that many. Ray Lewis is second on the team's interceptions list with 33.

108 -- Yards for the longest interception return in NFL history. It came on Nov. 23, 2008, when he picked off Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb deep in the end zone and ran it back the length of the field. Reed broke his own league record, which he set four years earlier.

1,590 -- Interception return yards by Reed, the most in NFL history. It's 107 more yards than Rod Woodson, who ranks second on the list. Reed has averaged 24.8 yards per return. Just think how many more yards he would have if he didn't lateral the ball.
