Each Saturday, players are overshadowed by their teammates, putting in a critical performance while other players end up getting the headlines. Each week we'll aim to shine a light on those overlooked contributors in Big 12's unsung heroes.
Here’s a look at one unsung hero for each team in Week 3:
Iowa State CB Brian Peavy: Redshirt freshman running back Mike Warren was the star on offense (126 rushing yards), but Peavy was the star on defense. The Cyclones cornerback finished with six tackles (three solo), three pass breakups and one interception in Iowa State’s 30-23 double overtime loss to Toledo.
Kansas State K Jack Cantele: The Wildcats kicker was clutch in Kansas State’s 39-33 win over Louisiana Tech. Filling in for the injured Matthew McCrane, Cantele was 4-for-4 on field goals, including a critical 44-yarder in the second overtime that forced a third extra period. Kansas State would not have won the game without his calm under pressure.
Oklahoma TE Mark Andrews: There has been plenty of buzz surrounding Andrews, who showed why some people have made comparisons to former standout tight end Jermaine Gresham. The redshirt freshman showed terrific speed on a 61-yard touchdown reception and weaved his way into the end zone for a 17-yard score after Baker Mayfield’s Houdini act.
Oklahoma State S Jordan Sterns: The junior continues to be productive for Mike Gundy’s team. Sterns had 13 tackles (eight solo), a pass breakup and a forced fumble in Oklahoma State’s 69-14 win over Texas-San Antonio. Sterns has 28 tackles in three games this season.
Texas RB Johnathan Gray: The senior was overshadowed by Jerrod Heard’s stellar showing in the Longhorns’ heartbreaking 45-44 loss to California. Gray ended up with 135 all-purpose yards while supplementing Heard’s big plays. Gray had 11 carries for 46 yards and two touchdowns, four receptions for 71 yards and a 18-yard kick return.
TCU RB Aaron Green: The Nebraska transfer was the perfect complement for Trevone Boykin with 21 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns in the Horned Frogs’ 56-37 win over SMU. Green had a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs and provided a consistent game-breaking threat to provide balance to the offense.
Texas Tech S Jah’shawn Johnson: Not only did he clinch the game by stealing the ball from Arkansas running back Alex Collins late in the final quarter, Johnson was all over the field throughout the Red Raiders’ 35-24 win over the Razorbacks. Johnson finished with 16 tackles (four solo) including a tackle for loss along with his forced fumble and fumble recovery.
