Spring position battle: Texas Tech

Texas Tech’s spring promises to be full of competition.

Outside of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, no Red Raider probably feels safe atop the depth chart, with position battles set to continue throughout the lineup. Several competitions deserve to be circled, but the competition to replace Jakeem Grant is particularly thrilling.

Let’s take a closer look at the “H” receiver position at Texas Tech:

Departed: Jakeem Grant.

Spring contenders: Junior Cameron Batson; junior De'Quan Bowman; sophomore Keke Coutee.

Summer contenders: None.

The skinny: While several other receivers have the potential to move to Texas Tech’s “H” receiver spot if needed, Batson, Coutee and Bowman figure to man the position in 2016.

Batson is the first in line to take Grant’s spot, with offensive coordinator Eric Morris and Mahomes already praising the work of the junior receiver. The Oklahoma native is similar to Grant in a lot of ways in that he's a combination receiver/returner who can make big plays with his quickness and shiftiness in the open field. He had 38 receptions for 368 yards and one touchdown, with 235 yards coming after the catch, during his first two seasons.

Bowman is a mid-year addition who brings another experienced option at the position. He’s in the same mold as Grant with terrific speed and quickness, which should allow him to be a deep threat as well as an open-field playmaker. His addition amps up the depth and competition at the "H" position.

Coutee played in 13 games as a true freshman, recording 11 receptions for 105 yards on 18 targets. One of the most highly regarded signees in the Class of 2015, Coutee appears to be the future at the position. It just remains to be seen if the future is now.

Prediction: The Red Raiders plan to allow the trio to compete for the starting spot. If more than one of them shows they can be a playmaker we should expect Kliff Kingsbury to find roles to take advantage of their skills, even if that means having two or more of them on the field at the same time. Batson begins the season as the starter, but Bowman and Coutee will each get opportunities to prove their playmaking potential in Grant’s absence. Between the three of them, Texas Tech is able to replace Grant’s production even if its unable to replace his game-changing explosiveness.
