Chiefs postgame notes

The Chiefs' defense was solid in the preseason, but it struggled in the season opener as the Chiefs transition to the 3-4 defense.

Baltimore passed at will. Kansas City coach Todd Haley thought he could grind out wins. Giving up 38 points is no way of grinding out a win. There are some nice pieces on this defense. But the ship needs to be tightened.

The Chiefs' offense was encouraging Sunday after struggling in the preseason. Brodie Croyle did a decent job as an injury replacement for Matt Cassel.

The Chiefs need to get Larry Johnson going. He had only 20 yards on 11 carries. Haley wants Johnson to be a workhorse and yardage eater.

Rookie kicker Ryan Succop showed his big leg witha 53-yard field goal. The Chiefs really like this player, who was the final pick of the draft.

The Chiefs’ much maligned offensive line played admirably in pass protection. The Ravens had three sacks.

The Chiefs’ pass-rush issues were in play again. Kansas City had one sack. They set an NFL record for fewest sacks in a season with 10 last year.
