Last Thursday night at the NFL draft in Philadelphia, Buffalo Bills first-round pick Tre'Davious White and commissioner Roger Goodell posed for a photo on stage with a ceremonial No. 1 jersey.
Almost a week later, that jersey is still stuffed in White's suitcase. A more important moment -- the birth of his son, Tre'Davious Jr., early Sunday morning -- has taken priority over unpacking.
White's girlfriend, Ikea, was due with their child this week. Because the draft fell during the final days of Ikea's pregnancy, White considered declining the NFL's invitation to travel to Philadelphia. But Ikea, confident their son would wait to enter the world until after White's entrance into the NFL, was fine with the trip.
As it turns out, it was a close call.
The Bills selected White, who played at LSU, with the No. 27 pick. He flew with members of his immediate family on a private jet Friday morning to Buffalo, where he toured the Bills' facility and met with reporters.
By 11:30 p.m. Friday, White was back in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ikea picked him up from the airport, and within 15 minutes of returning home, Ikea did not feel right. They went to the hospital but were sent home by 4 a.m. Saturday.
Around 8:45 a.m. that morning, Ikea woke White up. Her water had broken. For the second time that morning, it was off to the hospital.
"I jumped out of bed," White told ESPN 104.5 in Baton Rouge on Tuesday. "I didn't even get to brush my teeth. So we headed to the hospital and we've been there ever since."
Tre'Davious White, Jr. was born at 3:36 a.m. Sunday. The young family will move to Buffalo in the coming months, and one of the first items on their shopping list upon settling north will be winter coats.
"I've never seen snow in person," Ikea said. "So this is going to be a big change for us."
