Vikings-Packers Preview

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers' passing attack responded to criticism by completing every drive in Week 4 with at least a field goal attempt.

Getting the running game going Thursday night against the visiting Minnesota Vikings could be the next order of business, but the Packers aren't being picky about how they move the ball.

"There's no reason to beat our head against a wall and try to run it when we have matchups outside and that's what the numbers give you," wide receiver Jordy Nelson told the team's official website. "We'll continue to just adjust to what they're doing and be sound in what we're doing."

Green Bay (2-2) beat Chicago 38-17 on Sunday, and Rodgers threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-28 passing. Nelson, who leads the league with 33 catches and 459 yards, had 10 catches for 108 yards and two scores, while Randall Cobb broke out of his funk and caught seven passes for 113 yards and two TDs.

"I just wanted to remind everybody that it's a long season, and at some point, we're going to get this thing figured out," said Rodgers, limited to 162 yards in Week 3 at Detroit.

The Packers were outrushed 235-56 by the Bears, and their 73.0 yards per game ranks 28th in the league. Eddie Lacy had 48 on 17 carries and has yet to crack 50 yards this season after averaging 78.5 in 2013.

Minnesota (2-2) has been tested by some traditionally strong air attacks this season with its last three games coming against New England, New Orleans and Atlanta, and it has yet to allow a 300-yard passing day.

Third down has been its biggest issue with the Falcons and Saints converting 19 of 28 chances. The Vikings are allowing half of the third downs they face to be converted, and only the Packers (52.6 percent) have been worse.

"It's terrible," coach Mike Zimmer said. "We've got a lot of work to do. I'm extremely disappointed in that. We'll put a lot more time and effort into it than what we have."

Sunday's 41-28 home win over the Falcons was a bigger day for the offense with Minnesota's 558 yards accounting for the fourth-highest total in franchise history in Teddy Bridgewater's first start.

The short week could be most difficult on Bridgewater. The Vikings' rookie quarterback suffered a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter against Atlanta, and it's uncertain if he'll play. He was held out of practice Monday and Tuesday and has been listed as questionable.

Bridgewater impressed in his first full game by going 19 of 30 for 317 yards while rushing for 27 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Jarius Wright was his favorite target with eight catches for 132 yards, both career highs.

Bridgewater had some rookie company in the backfield with running back Jerick McKinnon making his first splash, carrying 18 times for 135 yards. Veteran Matt Asiata had 20 carries for 78 yards and three scores.

"Being a defensive coach, when you have two different types of backs come in there it changes your mindset on some of your calls and also the players, they have to think a little bit differently," Zimmer told the team's official website. "It's not necessarily different plays all of the time -- it's one guy can get to the perimeter faster, one guy can be a little bit more physical."

The Vikings' 134.8 rushing yards per game ranks fourth in the NFC, and their 241 against the Falcons was their highest total without Adrian Peterson since Dec. 11, 2011.

The Packers have provided opponents with plenty of room to run with an NFL-worst 176.0 yards allowed per game. The only way they stopped the Bears was with takeaways, and their plus-4 turnover mark is tied for the best in the NFC.

"I'm aware what the numbers are. Nobody likes it," coach Mike McCarthy said. "There are some things we did the last two weeks technique-wise ... this particular game against Chicago we didn't do those types of things.

"We're very critical of ourselves and our players are very accountable. Giving up that much yardage, that's no excuse for that. We understand that. There are things we can definitely work on and improve on."

The Packers are 15-4-1 at home against Minnesota in the regular season over the last 20 years. They're 3-0-1 in their past four against the Vikings at Lambeau Field, with the teams playing to a 26-all tie Nov. 24 as Rodgers watched from the sidelines with a broken collarbone.

Rodgers has averaged 309.8 yards in his last nine regular-season matchups with Minnesota.

The Vikings will have to handle Rodgers without Chad Greenway, who missed Week 4 with a broken hand and a broken rib and will be held out again.
