SOS: Packers bring in Tauscher for workout

Here’s a familiar name for those asking about Green Bay’s beleaguered offensive line: Mark Tauscher.

Tauscher The Packers brought Tauscher in for a workout Tuesday, a day after they gave up eight sacks in a 30-23 loss at Minnesota. Tauscher, who has spent the past 10 months recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, is likely to sign with the Packers at some point during their bye week.

McCarthy said he has spoken with current right tackle Allen Barbre and insisted that “Allen Barbre is still the starter” at right tackle. But if Tauscher proves healthy, it would likely be a matter of time before he assumes the position he played for most of the past nine seasons

Regardless, McCarthy said, “he would definitely be an asset to have back on our football team.”

Tauscher’s contract expired this spring, and McCarthy said at the time that Packers medical officials were targeting Oct. 1 as the end of his rehabilitation. Barbre won a training camp competition for the job, but the Packers clearly have been keeping tabs on Tauscher.

McCarthy said it was “always the plan” to evaluate Tauscher this month but insisted the Packers haven’t simply been trying to bide their time with Barbre.

“It wasn’t the plan to just wait until Oct. 1 and then bring him back,” McCarthy said. “[Medical officials] felt that Oct. 1 would be the date that Mark was ready to play.”

If nothing else, Tauscher would bring the Packers some comfort and depth on their line. He wouldn’t be able to help their situation on the left side, where Daryn Colledge has struggled to replace injured left tackle Chad Clifton. But Clifton is expected to return in time for the Packers’ Oct. 17 game against Detroit.
