RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tharold Simon will likely undergo minor knee surgery later this week, coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday.
"He has some real minor stuff he has to get cleaned up," Carroll said. "We're going to try to do this really quickly. If all stays on course, we will get this done in the next couple of days. What's going on is real minimal, but we think it might be the right time to do it."
Four other players are out for Thursday night's season opener against the Green Bay Packers at CenturyLink Field -- backup center Lemuel Jeanpierre (neck), running back Christine Michael (hamstring), tight end Cooper Helfet (knee) and rookie outside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis (hamstring).
Three players are listed as probable -- outside linebacker Bruce Irvin, nickel cornerback Jeremy Lane and rookie wide receiver Kevin Norwood.
With Simon out, DeShawn Shead probably becomes the first backup at cornerback. But Carroll praised newcomer Marcus Burley, the cornerback the team acquired Saturday from Indianapolis for a 2015 sixth-round draft choice.
"We've had really good work from Marcus this week," Carroll said. "He's done a nice job. He's really quick, but the reason we liked him so much is he is such a tough guy on special teams. He shows the mentality of our other guys and fits right in."
Carroll was a little coy about the situation with Jeanpierre, who has a neck injury that has not been explained. He said more information would come out later on Jeanpierre. His injury means Stephen Schilling moves to the backup spot at center behind Max Unger.
"Steve's had a great camp for us," Carroll said. "He showed he can play guard and center for us. We know that he can play."
Irvin and Norwood practiced for the first time this week after missing all of the preseason. Irvin had hip surgery in June, Norwood foot surgery last month.
"He did very well and looked like he was fine," Carroll said of Norwood. "They [the trainers] released him to start running twice as fast as guys normally do. He worked hard and was a normal guy in the rotation this week. So he'll be ready to play if we need him."
Carroll was a little less certain about Irvin: "If everything goes well, he'll have an opportunity to play."
Lane missed the final preseason game with a strained groin. "He did practice [Tuesday] and did a good job," Carroll said. "There's a good chance he'll be all right."
