Fantasy football D/ST outlook for Weeks 5-8: Jaguars a solid option in October

I get it, no one likes homework.

Streaming defenses might seem like an exhaustive amount of work for a fantasy football league, but those extra few bonus points that result from it pile up. And if you know anything about this wild, often unpredictable game, it's that an additional point here or there can prove the difference in a matchup.

Again in 2026, picking defenses that face the league's weakest offenses has proven to be the optimal strategy. The top three team defense/special teams (D/ST) all rank outside the position's top 10 in fantasy points, and in only 50% of their games did they even score a point total greater than the league's average.

D/STs that faced any of the preseason top 10 offenses for streaming purposes scored better than the league's average 55% of the time, and in 21% of their games they scored at least twice the league average.

All that said, the NFL can change dramatically over the first month of a new season, and the list of optimal matchups often significantly shifts. Keeping up with these changes is the homework involved in maximizing your D/ST lineup slot output.

But there's good news: I did your homework for you. What follows is my updated D/ST Road Map for Weeks 5-8, spanning the remainder of October (and first two days of November).

Top 10 offenses to exploit

With four weeks in the books, here are the 10 offenses that have been the best so far for streaming opposing D/STs:

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: added 6.5 fantasy points to a D/ST's score on average
2. New York Giants: +3.9
3 (tied). Atlanta Falcons: +3.5
3 (tied). Los Angeles Chargers: +3.5
5. Tennessee Titans: +2.9
6. Pittsburgh Steelers: +2.7
7. Philadelphia Eagles: +2.0
8 (tied). Miami Dolphins: +1.7
8 (tied). Indianapolis Colts: +1.7
10. Houston Texans: +1.5

What do the top four teams on the list have in common? Simple: They've all lost quarterbacks to injury at some point this season, and both the Buccaneers and Giants are starting lower-tier options at the position for the foreseeable future (the Giants for the duration). It's a reminder that the best offenses to exploit for D/ST streaming purposes are the ones with the shakiest quarterback situations.

One caveat with the Falcons: Their Weeks 1 and 2 opponents totaled 44 fantasy points from their D/STs, but in Weeks 3 and 4, with QB Michael Penix Jr. back, their opponents scored minus-6 and minus-5 fantasy points from their D/STs, allowing 80 scoreboard points and 918 total yards. The full-season numbers might say that the Falcons are a plus matchup for D/STs, but they're at best a borderline top-10 target in my estimation.

The New York Jets (+1.2) and Cleveland Browns (+0.2), preseason top-three teams on this list, lurk just beneath the cutoff, at 12th and 16th.

Top 10 offenses to avoid

1. San Francisco 49ers: subtracted 6.0 points from a D/ST's score on average
2. Kansas City Chiefs: minus-4.6
3. Chicago Bears: minus-4.4
4. Detroit Lions: minus-3.8
5. Dallas Cowboys: minus-3.4
6. Jacksonville Jaguars: minus-3.3
7. Carolina Panthers: minus-3.1
8. Buffalo Bills: minus-2.4
9. Cincinnati Bengals: minus-1.1
10. Baltimore Ravens: minus-1.1

Seven of these 10 were on the preseason list, but how about those Panthers? The Bryce Young-led offense -- one of the best to target with D/ST streaming during his first three NFL seasons -- has scored 32 or more points in three of its first four games, matching the number of times the Panthers did that from 2023-25 combined. Young has significantly cut his interception and sack rates and has his team looking like a legitimate candidate to stick on this side of the D/ST top-10 lists.

The preseason No. 1 Los Angeles Rams (minus-0.4) narrowly missed the cut, but they've also faced one of the more challenging season-opening schedules (SF in Australia; NYG on MNF; @DEN; @PHI).

The D/ST to lock in for October: Jacksonville Jaguars

There really isn't a defense you can lock in for every one of the next four weeks, being that the top teams available in more than half of ESPN leagues all have their byes between Weeks 5 and 8. But if you're hoping to find a multiple-week D/ST, the Jaguars' next two matchups (PHI, HOU), as well as their Week 8 exiting their bye (IND), fit the bill. Jacksonville is tied for fifth in D/ST scoring, behind 14- and 13-point performances in Weeks 1 and 3, and it will play the next two games in London, where D/STs have averaged three more fantasy points per game (7.95) than in all other locations (5.92) since the beginning of 2023.

D/ST week-by-week Road Map

Here's a handy guide for streaming the position on a weekly basis, and we'll also have updated versions to help steer you through Weeks 9-12 and 13-17. All D/STs are ranked in my order of preference regardless of roster rate in ESPN leagues, so that you won't miss out on a higher-quality defense if it becomes available in yours.

Defenses rostered in fewer than 50% of ESPN leagues are both italicized and bolded, to identify optimal streaming matchups, while those to avoid are over 50% rostered.
