Kapranova wins third gold at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships

BAKU, Azerbaijan - Olga Kapranova won the club event Thursday for her third gold medal, helping Russia sweep all the individual titles at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.

Teammate Vera Sessina took the ribbon title Thursday, with Kapranova winning the ball and rope individual finals on Wednesday.

Kapranova scored 16.775 points to win the club and was back on the mat a minute later to open the ribbon competition but could finish only fourth. Sessina scored 17.050 points for her first individual title.

"I did not expected to win so many medals," Kapranova said.

Ukraine's Anna Bessonova, who came second in the ball and rope, scored 16.550 and 16.525 respectively for silver medals in the club and ribbon events.

Olympic silver medalist Irina Chachina of Russia took bronze in the clubs with 16.400, while Ukraine's Natalia Godunko was third in the ribbon with 16.325.

Russia totaled 166.025 points to win the team competition. Ukraine was second with 157.175, followed by Belarus with 148.925.

The championships continues Friday with group competitions on two apparatuses, and 24 gymnasts have qualified to compete for the all-around title on Saturday.
