LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Mark Adams, a former senior official with the World Economic Forum, is the new director of communications for the International Olympic Committee.

Adams, a 45-year-old Briton and former journalist, will take up the new post at the end of May, the IOC said Tuesday.

Adams has been managing director and head of media and communications at the Geneva headquarters of the World Economic Forum, where he helped organize the gathering of global political and business leaders at the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos each January.

Adams started his career as a reporter with the British Broadcasting Corporation before moving to ITN/ITV commercial television in London.

"His expertise and creativity in finding innovative ways to reach out to young people will be a strong asset," IOC president Jacques Rogge said in a statement.

Adams was editorial director of the multilingual Euronews channel based in Lyon, France, before joining the economic forum.

"The IOC is one of a handful of truly world class organizations with a powerful global influence," Adams said. "It has the ability to be a force for good across a whole range of issues and to reach into the lives of millions of people worldwide."

Adams replaces another Briton, Giselle Davies, who spent more than six years as the IOC's communications director after serving as head of corporate communications at the Jordan Formula One team.

Davies left last year after the Beijing Olympics to pursue other projects.
