Seattle's Adrian Beltre hits for cycle

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre joined Stephen Drew of the Diamondbacks in hitting for the cycle on Monday.

It was the first time two players hit for the cycle on the same day since Sept. 17, 1920, when Bobby Veach of the Detroit Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants did it, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Batting cleanup, Beltre homered in the second off Texas Rangers starter Matt Harrison, then singled in the fourth and sixth off Harrison. He doubled in the seventh off Luis Mendoza and tripled in the eighth off Josh Rupe to become the fourth Mariners player ever to hit for the cycle.

John Olerud was the last to do it for Seattle, on June 16, 2001, against San Diego. Alex Rodriguez and Jay Buhner also hit for the cycle as members of the Mariners.

Beltre scored five runs to equal a Seattle club record and his five hits matched a career high, reaching that number for the third time.
