READY TO RUMBLE
What's he Werth? |
---|
Two executives who have spoken with the Phillies say they've been "all over the place" on what they'd want in return for Jayson Werth. One day, they're looking for prospects to package for Oswalt. The next, they're looking for a controllable starter who would enable them to forget about overpaying for Oswalt. Another exec told Rumblings the Phillies are "walking both roads" so that they can position themselves to go either way later in the week. In other words, stay tuned. But with David DeJesus hurt and off the market, "that puts the Phillies in a great spot if they want to trade this guy," a third exec said. "He'd be by far the best position player available." |
The presence of Royalty |
Lots of Zack Greinke and Joakim Soria rumors flying in Kansas City. But teams we've surveyed say they see no sign that either is going anywhere. The Yankees just made another run at Soria, as first reported by SI.com -- even dangling Jesus Montero. But the Royals weren't interested. And they've shown no serious inclination to deal Greinke, either. An official of one club that called said it was told: "We'll always listen. So if you want to throw enough names at us, feel free." But what the Royals actually want is a package led by multiple future ace-type starters. And that's a price no team would pay in this prospects-are-gold era we live in. |
Dunn deal |
The Nationals continue to talk to Adam Dunn's agents about an extension and have essentially made it clear that if they can get him to agree to an extension in the next few days, he'll stay. And if not, he'll go. Rumblings continue to surface about a possible three-team deal involving the Nationals, White Sox and Diamondbacks that would send Edwin Jackson to Washington, Dunn to Chicago and a bunch of young pitchers to Arizona. |
Over on Downs |
Toronto left-hander Scott Downs "is the best reliever you can trade for," one NL exec said. But all Downs trade rumors are for entertainment purposes only, at least for a few more days, the exec said, because Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is just stoking fires and raising stakes for now. "I'm convinced they're going to trade Scott Downs," the same exec said. "But they're not going to trade him 'til Friday or Saturday. So there's no reason to even get serious until then." |

TRADE SCORECARD
Keith Law on the Dan Haren trade:
I'm having a hard time believing this was all the market would give up for Dan Haren. Were three bodies, a player to be named later (believed to be Tyler Skaggs, though it's not a lock) plus salary relief really the going price for a pitcher who rated among the top five pitchers in the NL last season, was reasonably compensated and was suffering from a lot of bad luck this season?
